GeoShield Radon Testing and Mitigation Specialists

GeoShield Validation, Verification & Testing programs are currently underway across Europe including projects in the United Kingdom, the Republic of Ireland, Romania, Croatia, Belgium, Turkey and as far east as the Philippines.

BS 8485:2015+A1:2019 sets the codes of practice which govern the installation of membrane systems designed to protect against the ingress of Methane, Carbon Dioxide and has annexes regarding Radon & VOC’s. Dependent on the various project criteria independent inspection is now often mandatory to ensure every effort is made to minimise the risk to life.

Radon is a naturally occurring odourless, colourless radioactive gas that is everywhere and can affect properties such as workplaces, schools & homes, of all ages & locations.

Radon is generally not a health concern outdoors because the gas disperses rapidly to very low concentrations. In the outdoors, radon levels typically range between 5 and 15 Bq/m3.

However after radon gas enters buildings through cracks and other holes in the foundation, it can become trapped inside increasing the level. There is a wide range of Radon levels in buildings, ranging from 10 Bq/m3 to 10 000 Bq/m3. Residents and workers could be unaware of very high radon levels, since they cannot see nor smell radon.

If your property has levels below 100 Bq m-3, your personal risk remains low, and there is no reason for concern. But as radon levels rise, the risk of lung cancer increases, which is why it is important to determine whether the average yearly level of radon in your property is above or below the Government's recommended Action Level.

There is a wide variation in work environments in terms of size and nature, but excessive amounts of Radon gas are not uncommon in almost every kind of environment. There are many factors affecting the amount of Radon collected in a building, such as its location, structure, and how it is used.

The biggest occupational health risk in offices, where hazards are typically low, is Radon. Additionally, employees who live close to the workplace may also be exposed to high Radon levels. Staff members can benefit from a better understanding of Radon.

Are you aware of the regulation that already exists for levels of radon in the workplace?

Employers and businesses alike are responsible for the health and safety of their workers, including providing an environment that is free of radon gas.

Regulations on health and safety at work require employers to assess all hazards. Therefore if you have basement offices or your premises are located in a radon affected area, an area where more than 10% of homes have high radon concentrations, then you are required by law to conduct radon tests on your properties to predict whether your employees' health is at risk..

GeoShield has created GSR+ TECH Program, a RADON monitoring strategy specifically to evaluate the effects of RADON in the workplace. Typical high profile categories include:

  • Schools
  • Hospitals
  • Public Buildings
  • Universities

The GSR+ TECH monitoring program is a comprehensive strategy that is tailored to each individual project. GeoShield uses the most technically advanced equipment combined with their experience when performing commercial Radon testing so that they can produce custom handover packages which provides the most accurate picture of RADON gas ingress in the workplace.

  • Accurate quotations tailored to the specific building. (free of charge)
  • Bespoke RADON Gas monitoring strategies
    • Adaptive monitoring
    • Instant monitoring
    • 10-day monitoring
    • 3-month monitoring
  • Our 6-minute sampler for accurate live mapping
  • Comprehensive handover package tailored to the client’s requirements
  • Action areas can be dealt with by our RADON gas mitigation and remediation team
  • If required a full remediation strategy can be designed for the whole workplace should the need arise.

A Client Friendly Radon Gas Monitoring Program For The Workplace With guidelines from WHO and IRMA industrial RADON gas monitoring within the workplace should be given serious consideration. The GSR+ TECH program incorporates all the stringent and Quality Assurance to create peace of mind in the workplace. GSR+ Tech Strategy:

  • After the project assessment, the monitoring should be long-term, a minimum of three months, with additional time periods used as background information
  • All monitoring should conform to ISO 17025 or NELAC standards
  • Monitor placement
    • All rooms occupied for more than four hours/day
    • Large rooms should have one detector per 150m/2
    • Additional floors should have at least two detectors per floor
    • Large rooms for additional floors one detector per 250m/2
    • Basements and high-risk areas should be individually assessed
  • A RADON monitor pre-study should take place to formulate the most cost-effective plan
  • Taking the monitoring process to the employees home could also be considered, this could compare results from the employees workplace to the home environment
  • If required in a high risk commercial setting, personal dosimetry can be introduced.
  • Our detectors are placed as per current European guidelines and are tamper free
  • We issue information to the employees explaining the monitoring process, this takes the form of posters, leaflets or emails dependent on the project

Systems Protecting Against Radon Gas Ingress Into New Constructions

Home Builders & Main Contractors need to ensure comprehensive measures have been taken when protecting against RADON gas ingress, to provide evidence of this important activity GeoShield have formulated the GSR+ Quality Assurance Program.

GSR+ Quality Assurance Program

The GSR+ Quality Assurance Program is a comprehensive hand-over document created for house builders and developers to pass to future owners. GSR+ provides new buyers with a historical log of the protection system application, ensures peace of mind and assists in conveyancing. The GSR+ comprises:

  • The Radon Protection Design & Validation
  • Relevant Information from BRE 211
  • Independent Verification of the Installation
  • Test Results of Radon Monitoring (3 months testing)
  • GeoShield Validation Certificate
  • Desk Top Evaluation of Sub-Floor Ventilation

The comprehensive GSR+ Verification Program is UN-PARALLELED in the new build construction industry.

BRE 211 ‘Radon, Guidance on Protective Measures for New Buildings’

Following BRE 211 ‘Radon, Guidance on Protective Measures for New Buildings’ the GSR+ program provides security & peace of mind when protecting new constructions against the ingress of the life threatening carcinogenic gas Radon.

The GSR+ Program incorporates all the stringent features & benefits required in CIRIA 735 ‘Good practice on the testing and verification of protection systems’ with further security provided from short, medium & long term (where required) in-situ Radon Gas Monitoring.
